Atomic bomb Essay Example For Students
Atomic bomb Essay Word Count: 1690 Just before the beginning of World War II, Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Urged by Hungarian-born physicists Leo Szilard, Eugene Wingner, and Edward Teller, Einstein told Roosevelt about Nazi German efforts to purify Uranium-235 which might be used to build an . Shortly after that the United States Government began work on the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was the code name for the United States effort to develop the Atomic bomb Essay before the Germans did. The first successful experiments in splitting a uranium atom had been carried out in the autumn of 1938 at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin(Groueff 9) just after Einstein wrote his letter. So the race was on. Major General Wilhelm D. Styer called the Manhattan Project the most important job in the war . . . an all-out effort to build an atomic bomb.(Groueff 5) It turned out to be the biggest development in warfare and sciences biggest development this century. The most complicated issue to be addressed by the scientists working on the Manhattan Project was ;the production of ample amounts of enriched uranium to sustain a chain reaction.;(Outlaw 2) At the time, Uranium-235 was hard to extract. Of the Uranium ore mined, only about 1/500 th of it ended up as Uranium metal. Of the Uranium metal, ;the fissionable isotope of Uranium (Uranium- 235) is relatively rare, occurring in Uranium at a ratio of 1 to 139. ;(Szasz 15) Separating the one part Uranium-235 from the 139 parts Uranium-238 proved to be a challenge. ;No ordinary chemical extraction could separate the two isotopes. Only mechanical methods could effectively separate U-235 from U-238.;(2) Scientists at Columbia University solved this difficult problem. A ;massive enrichment laboratory/plant;(Outlaw 2) was built at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. H. C. Urey, his associates, and colleagues at Columbia University designed a system that ;worked on the principle of gaseous diffusion.;(2) After this process was completed, ;Ernest O. Lawrence (inventor of the Cyclotron) at the University of California in Berkeley implemented a process involving magnetic separation of the two isotopes.;(2) Finally, a gas centrifuge was used to further separate the Uranium-235 from the Uranium-238. The Uranium-238 is forced to the bottom because it had more mass than the Uranium-235. ;In this manner uranium-235 was enriched from its normal 0.7% to weapons grade of more than 90%.;(Grolier 5) This Uranium was then transported to ;the Los Alamos, N. Mex., laboratory headed by J. Robert Oppenheimer. ;(Grolier 5) ;Oppenheimer was the major force behind the Manhattan Project. He literally ran the show and saw to it that all of the great minds working on this project made their brainstorms work. He oversaw the entire project from its conception to its completion.;(Outlaw 3) Once the purified Uranium reached New Mexico, it was made into the components of a gun-type atomic weapon. ;Two pieces of U-235, individually not large enough to sustain a chain reaction, were brought together rapidly in a gun barrel to form a supercritical mass that exploded instantaneously.;(Grolier 5) ;It was originally nicknamed Thin Man'(after Roosevelt, but later renamed Little Boy (for nobody) when technical changes shortened the proposed gun barrel. ;(Szasz 25) The scientists were so confident that the gun-type atomic bomb would work ;no test was conducted, and it was first employed in military action over Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945.;(Grolier 5) Before the Uranium-235 ;Little Boy; bomb had been developed to the ;point of seeming assured of success,;(Grolier 5) another bomb was proposed. The Uranium-238 that had been earlier ruled out as an option was being looked at. It could capture a free neutron without fissioning and become Uranium-239. ;But the Uranium-239 thus produced is unstable (radioactive) and decays first to neptunium-239 and then to plutonium-239. Planet Warming Essay Groves reason for choosing Oppenheimer to run the Los Alamos lab was we (are) not going to find a better man. When the Los Alamos lab was built, all the people involved with the atomic bomb, physicists, mathematicians, chemists, engineers, skilled metalworkers, and every type of person needed to create such a complex weapon, were moved there, along with their families. Pretty soon, 120,000 people were .

The Bible Has Many Stories We Can Share For Different Reasons. Rather
The Bible has many stories we can share for different reasons. Rather it be Adam and Eve, Noah and the Ark, or David and Goliath, we use the stories for lessons in our lives. Capitol Punishment can also relate to one of the stories. The Villagers gathered with their stones. The Criminal was a woman who was convicted of adultery. As the villagers raised their hands ready to throw the stone Jesus came and stepped in front of the woman. Looking at the angered villagers he said, He who has no sin shall cast the first stone. The villagers all dropped their stones. This story represents my opinion on capitol punishment. No one on the earth is completely without sin and almost everyone could be punished. But being the hypocritical society we are today we still go on relentlessly persecuting those who we see as lower than us. Its not just Christians who protest the misuse of capitol punishment. Capital punishment goes against almost every religion. Although isolated passages of the Bible have been quoted in support of the death penalty, almost all religious groups in the United States regard executions as immoral. Capital punishment also is an ineffective punishment for those who commit crimes seeing the death penalty as the easy way out. Scientific studies have consistently failed to demonstrate that executions deter people from committing crime. The respected Thorsten Sellin studies of the United States in 1962, 1967 and 1980 concluded that the death penalty was not a deterrent. When our founding fathers of America designed the Constitution which is the base of our government they had to make ten Bill of Rights for the satisfaction of all thirteen colonies. One of those ten Bill of Rights was the eighth one which said under any circumstances that the United States could not use any cruel or unusual crimes. Death penalty opponents, including many religious groups and individuals, and a growing number of prison wardens, maintain that capital punishment constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment. Killing, whether carried out by an individual or the state, is immoral and ought not to be condoned. Maybe the punishment wouldnt be as bad if there was absolute surety that the person the jury was putting on death row was guilty but as most systems in the United States the Capitol punishment system to has its serious faults. The only difference between the other faulty US systems and the faulty capitol punishment system is that the capitol punishment system can cause an innocent person to die. Studies show that in this century, at least 400 innocent people have been convicted of capital crimes they did not commit. Of those 400, 23 were executed. The wrongful execution of an innocent person is an injustice that can never be rectified. With the faulty capitol punishment system, comes money. Because of their ignorance to the subject many people who are pro-capitol punishment argue that it would cost less to just go ahead and finish the prisoner off than to pay for their living habits in jail for the rest of the prisoners life. The truth of the matter is that a new study has proven that it cost 3.1 million dollars for an execution to take place in Florida. Keeping the prisoner in prison is almost half of that much. And if they want to die any way, capitol punishment is the better punishment. Im not saying that a serial killer who has raped and killed seven people should be allowed to stay in a nice facilitated jail and for good behavior get parol in ten years. I think that the punishment should be at least fifty years in prison without parol. The atmosphere in prison alone is a hell of its own and Im sure the labor that could be assigned to the murderer would be worse enough. As I have mentioned two times before, prisoners want the death penalty as a means of an easy way out. Today more than 3,300 people are on death row. Executions -- by hanging, electrocution, lethal injection, and even by firing squad -- have become almost commonplace. Regardless of which method is used, the death penalty is a barbaric anachronism and should be

Why I Want to Study Abroad Essay SampleWriting an essay about why I want to study abroad is difficult because, as you know, I've never left the UK. It could also be useful to look at a variety of essays from various schools so that you can see whether you really like any of them.I am interested in learning to write a foreign language - I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to like it much at all, although I do find it challenging. Free Essays on Grading
In the essay, ââ¬Å"A Proposal To Abolish Gradingâ⬠author Paul Goodman states why he thinks schools should abolish grading. Goodman gives many reasons why todayââ¬â¢s colleges and universities should abolish their standard grading philosophies. I agree with many of the ideas that Goodman presented in this essay. Goodman states that many times the grades that are earned in college do not matter once you have graduated. He believes that the only thing that matters is the diploma from the school that you have graduated from. Goodman states, ââ¬Å"Indeed, I doubt that many employers bother to look at such grades; they are more likely to be interested merely in the fact of a Harvard diploma, whatever that connotes to them. (504)â⬠Goodman basically says that, it is the quality of the school that you graduate from, not how well someone does in it. Did Goodman believe this when he was in school? How well did Goodman do in college? Not evaluating the grades, and just looking at diploma, basically defeats the purpose of trying to excel in school, because in the end all someone needs is the diploma. Often students are under a great amount of pressure from their parents, teachers and their peers. Students will even get into competitions with each other, to earn the best grades. ââ¬Å"It was certainly not to pit one young fellow against another in an ugly competition. (504)â⬠Parents are often another significant pressure on students, because they are usually the ones paying for their childrenââ¬â¢s education, and they want their children to have the best opportunities. Goodman also states that grading cause many students to look to unethical methods to succeed. Being under such pressure is not usually a positive situation. Many times students will have to resort to other methods such as plagiarizing, and cheating. A Practical Five-Step Strategy to Get More Social Media Followers as a Writer
A Practical Five-Step Strategy to Get More Social Media Followers as a Writer Right at this moment, there are millions of pseudo-influencers online trying to hot-take their way to fame. If youre one of them, you can move on to the next article. This one isnt for you. This is for the people with a genuine message burning inside. The people who have something important to say but cant seem to get any traction. The people who, no matter how hard they try, arent getting new followers. The people who are starting to get discouraged. Do This For A Month And See What Happens. Focus on one social media channel for one full month. The most important fact to understand about social media is that it is one (and only one) aspect of your strategy to gain readers. In general, you want people there for as short a time as possible. Your ultimate goal is to move people from social media (a channel you cant control) to an email list (a channel you can control). When you have peoples email addresses (as in an email list), you have an almost-guaranteed way to get a hold of them. When you send an email to your email list, theres no complex algorithm to understand. Just write a good email, send it to people, and, if it interests them, theyll pay attention. Your social media channel, on the other hand, is not something you can control. Since you only have peoples social media handles, your ability to contact them is tenuous. Its based on a platform and an algorithm you have no control over. But most of all social media eats up a significant amount of the most valuable resource you have as an entrepreneur: Your time. The Practical 5-Step Strategy Make a list of all the social media channels youre on and the number of followers. Browse through each social media channel to determine where you have the most activity, but most of all, the most engagement. Choose a channel to focus on for the month. Research (and use!) the best practices for your chosen channel. Were all so busy we throw the same graphic on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, whatever, and call it a day. Not cool and not productive. No more! Find out the ideal image dimension sizes for your chosen channel. Make your graphics for that channel. Figure out the content people respond to most. Emulate its style and use it for your own content. Consider video. Your goal is to become an expert on the best practices of your chosen channel. Use your extra time to dig into another lead generation method. Here are a few to consider. SEO (Excellent post from our expert) Guest Blogging YouTube Paid Media Quora Podcasting There are dozens more of these Pick a strategy outside of social media. Test it. See what results you get, then try another if its not working. Youll be shocked how you can change your results when you focus on being an expert on one channel instead of seven. If youre not sure which to pick, we can vouch for the fact that theres huge potential in organic SEO if youre patient. (We grew a New York Times bestselling authors monthly blog traffic If It Doesnt Work After a Month, Do This Try another one. Keep testing until you find a channel that works. Keep trying to crack the code for the channel youre focusing on for that month. And, as you dive in, remember: Everyone started at 0 followers. What If Nothing Works If you cant get traction after trying every single social media channel out there, people arent resonating with what you have to say. Its time to re-evaluate your message. Survey your people. Ask what they want to hear from you, then provide it. Youre not the first person to run into this issue. In fact, youre not the first person to run into this issue today. Dont be discouraged. Dont give up. Instead, focus on systematically testing the different platforms to see what performs best for you. Theres no silver bullet here. It will take a lot of effort and elbow grease, but the end result will be worth it. And remember, youre not alone. Patriot's Act Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Patriot's Act - Essay Example The Patriotââ¬â¢s Act has given more powers to security agents in the United States to conduct searches, gather intelligence without need of warrants. The Act also allowed the government to freeze monies meant for terror groups and online security has also been bolstered. All these provisions in the Patriotââ¬â¢ Act have increased security and thwarted terror attacks against the United States. However, some provisions of the Act have been ineffective in fighting terrorism and most of these acts are stem from foreign based provisions. Introduction The September 11, 2001 terror attack on the United States shocked the country and the world at large. Following the attacks, several security measures from different fronts were initiated to guard against more terror attacks on the Unites States. One of the measures that were initiated was the enactment of the Patriotââ¬â¢s Act, a law enacted a few weeks after the September 11, 2011 attacks. The Patriotââ¬â¢s act contains several provisions that were to safeguard the United States from terrorism. For instance, the act gives power to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other agencies to conduct random searches on an individualââ¬â¢s household. The Patriot act is still in operation till today and President Obama extended some of the provisions of the act that were to expire this year. ... Security agencies in the United States have been given more freedom to investigate or interrogate terrorists from all regions globally. The Patriot act has also led to increased security at border points and entry points into the United States including ports and airports. The Patriot Act had a profound effect on the definition of terrorism especially on the front of domestic terrorism where acts of terrors were taken seriously (Wong, 2007). The act reduced restrictions on security agencies and it gave them power to investigate any American citizen while at the same time, the act allowed American security forces to investigate any foreigner suspected of being a terrorist. The act also allowed American security forces to protect critical infrastructure and demand information concerning any individual in the United States (Smith, 2009). The Patriot Act also gave powers to the secretary of Finance to regulate funds of suspected foreign individuals or corporations involved in corruption. The act has however tightened the noose on money laundering and this has reduced terror activities in the United States. The Act contains provisions that gave power to authorities to detain or deport immigrants involved in terrorism. These provisions have been successful in reducing acts of terror in the United States (Citizen 68, 2010). Increased surveillance of the internet and online activity has enhanced security since it has been effective in curbing theft of sensitive information. In terms of general safety, the Patriot Act has been effective in ensuring that acts of terror against the United States are greatly reduced (Stefoff, 2010). The Patriotââ¬â¢s Act has
